We created this guide to help you choose the right studs for your specific snowmobile track, calculate the quantity required and install them. We also provide recommended stud placement patterns for each track.

1. ST or SS: which stud should you choose?

In this document, the ST series is recommended for more versatile grip on trails, in corners and on icy surfaces. The SS series is intended for more aggressive riding on trails and ice. Always match your choice to the recommendation for the specific track.

SS models are not recommended for Cobra 1.352″ and Ripsaw II tracks, because their tread lugs are narrower and more flexible. ST-19R is specified for these variants.

2. How do you calculate the number of studs required?

You need the track length, pitch and chosen stud pattern. Pitch is the distance between repeating track rows; use the same units for length and pitch in the calculation.

Example from the document: 137″ (3 479.8 mm) ÷ 2.86″ (72.644 mm) ≈ 48 rows. With 4 studs per row: 48 × 4 = 192 studs. Pattern 5–4–4: (5 + 4 + 4) ÷ 3 = 4⅓ studs per row; 48 × 4⅓ = 208 studs. For this example, do not round the average down to 4.3.

If a specific iGrip table is provided for your track, use its row and stud counts. For other patterns, count all complete repetitions and any remaining rows.

3. Installation steps

1. Find your track below. Check the exact model, lug height and whether holes are already prepared.
2. Choose the stud and pattern. Consider the stiffness of the track lugs and whether the pattern repeats every 3 or 6 rows.
3. Mark the appropriate positions. Check their position relative to the tunnel protectors.
4. Prepare holes only as instructed for the specific track. Do not apply one drilling depth to all tracks. For variants with prepared holes, follow their separate section.
5. Screw in the studs to the position shown in the illustration. The grey area represents rubber. Distinguish stud insertion depth from protrusion above the rubber: neither is the same as the pilot-hole drilling depth.
6. Inspect and maintain. Inspect the complete pattern and stud positions. The Ripsaw II recommendations also specify regularly checking insertion depth and, if necessary, screwing the studs in further to the position shown.

4. Model and drilling recommendations table

3/32″ (2.38125 mm); 1/2″ (12.70 mm); 5/8″ (15.875 mm); 3/4″ (19.05 mm). Millimetre values are provided for comparison; they are not instructions to replace the iGrip drill bit with another size.

Do not choose an installation pattern based only on a similar track name. Send the exact track model, length, width, pitch, lug height and photos. Specify the snowmobile model and whether it has tunnel protectors and factory-prepared holes.
